... to protect nature and preserve natural habitat," said Alis Sahabi, president of SE Corporation and master developer of Dos Lagos. "Every golfer will help maintain the cultural and historical character of the land. One dollar from every round played will be donated to the Riverside-Corona Resource Conservation District (RCRCD) to monitor and maintain the habitat areas along the course.”
Fees range from $45 weekdays to $69 on the weekends and include a golf cart, although walking is also encouraged. Senior and twilight rates will be offered. Tee times can be booked online eight days in advance at www.DosLagosGolf.com or by calling (951) 277-8787.
Dos Lagos was built on the site of an abandoned silica mine, which left the land scarred from years of neglect and illegal dumping. Ali Sahabi, president of SE Corporation and the master developer of Dos Lagos, took on an ambitious plan to reclaim the land, restore the Temescal Creek that runs through it and bring nature back to the area. In partnership with the RCRCD, Dos Lagos is four years into a 20-year habitat restoration and enhancement plan providing a sanctuary and vital greenbelt corridor for native species.
RESTORATION OF NATURE Regeneration is evident and wildlife is returning to the 286-acres that comprise the Dos Lagos Golf Course and greenbelt, adjacent hillside open space preserve and restored mile-long Temescal Creek that meanders through the course. Coastal sage scrub and a variety of native plant life once damaged by brushfires and off-road vehicle activity now provide habitat for native and endangered species and critical linkages to the 13,000-acre Lake Mathews Estelle Wildlife Preserve and Prado Dam to the north and Lake Elsinore to the south. The 135-acre hillside preserve interfaces the easternmost edge of the golf greenbelt, enabling the movement of wildlife throughout the golf course and along natural bioswales, lake areas and the Temescal Creek.
PLAYING THE COURSE Dye has blended the natural surroundings of the old quarry site with unique and varied golf holes. The opening two holes on the south side present narrow fairways and a preview of what awaits golfers once they cross the Temescal Creek.
When golfers cross the bridge to the north side of the course, a tricky par-3 awaits them. Dye used the natural contours of the land for the par-5 No. 4 hole, and the two par-4s, No. 6 and 7, both of which have doglegs to the right. No. 8 is a short par-3 with a large green that makes three-putting a possibility and the front nine is ended with a medium-size par-4 that doglegs to the left.
The back nine offers more landing area in the fairways, but Dye has presented many risk/reward possibilities. That is evident on No. 12, a long par-5 that has a forced carry that will make going for the green in two shots a daunting task. No. 14 is a 614-yard par-5 that is a visually intimidating hole stretching upward to the highest point on the golf course. Golfers proceed downhill for the next three holes, culminating with the par-3 No. 17 that features a dramatic drop from the tee box to the green. The final hole is a par-5 that has a lake on the right but tempts golfers to try and reach the green in two shots.
